All Emergencies - Basic life support principles:

  1. Maintain an airway
  2. Assess breathing
  3. Monitor circulation
Monitor and record all vital signs.
Apnea

Treatment:

  1. The treatment for apnea is to reestablish the airway and ventilate with supplemental oxygen. Head tilt, jaw lift, oral or nasal airways, or endotracheal intubation may be required to establish a patent airway.
  2. Rule out airway blockage, aspiration.
  3. A secondary measure is to reverse narcotics with naloxone and reverse benzodiazepines with flumazenil. Do not delay ventilation efforts in order to administer these agents.

If the patient is apneic due to opioids and/or benzodiazepines, the priority is ventilation, not reversal!!
