All Emergencies - Basic life support principles:

  1. Maintain an airway
  2. Assess breathing
  3. Monitor circulation
Monitor and record all vital signs.
Tachycardia

Most frequent causes of Tachycardia
Sinus tachycardia is most commonly seen as a normal response to physiological stress:

  1. Inadequate analgesia/sedation
  2. Abnormal blood gases
  3. Hypovolemia
  4. Hypotension
  5. Medications such as atropine, epinephrine
  6. Fever
  7. Hypoglycemia

Tachycardia associated with hypotension has a completely different set of causes and treatments than tachycardia associated with hypertension. Therefore before treating tachycardia it is essential to recheck the blood pressure.

Treatment:

  1. Treat the underlying cause.
  2. Beta-blockers may be effective.
